Objectives and Guiding Principles:
The development of foreign language discipline and specialties is a basic link and key factor for the growth of the School of Foreign Studies, which reflects its educational ability and teaching and research level, involves the quality and effectiveness of foreign language teaching. The development also provides an importance platform for young teachers to improve themselves and for English teachers to improve their social status.
The guiding principle of this center is to provide intellectual support and institutional guarantee for the development of disciplines such as “English Language and Literature”, “Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics” and “Master of Translation and Interpreting (Translation)” in the school, as well as the building of the specialties of English and Indonesian; clarify the differences and connection between disciplines and specialties; continously explore and innovate; incorporate student cultivation, scientific research, and social services into the development system of the disciplines; and accelerate the building of a trinity cultivation formation that features social division of labor, subject knowledge and educational structure.
Responsibilities and Work Content:
The discipline construction is undertaken by discipline echelons as the main forces, with “English Language and Literature”, “Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics”, and “Master of Translation and Interpreting (Translation)” as the research objects. The responsibilities of the center include: in step with the investment in hardware and experience accumulation for software, systematically improving the level of foreign language disciplines; enhancing foreign language research ability, enlarging cultivation capacity for students, and strengthening comprehensive capacity to provide social services. The basic work content includes identifying and clarifying the positioning of foreign language disciplines, exploring new fields for foreign language research, developing comprehensive foreign language learning platforms, building a proficient foreign language teaching team, identifying and training foreign language discipline leaders, establishing a foreign language learning base, obtaining funding for foreign language projects, achieving outstanding scientific breakthroughs, promoting international exchanges and collaboration, and fostering a conducive academic environment.
The specialties are developed based on the law of foreign language education and teaching and the needs for economic and social development. Therefore, the English and Indonesian language specialties of the school are rationally arranged and structured. With the focus on targeted objectives and student training, this center has constantly consolidated the building of foreign language specialties for the school and highlighted the development characteristics of the foreign language specialties. In this regard, the basic work content includes: clarifying the goal of student training, improving training programs, formulating professional teaching plans, ensuring the readiness of teaching facilities, optimizing the curriculum design system, deepening the reform of education and teaching, building a first-class team of teachers, strengthening the construction of practical training bases, creating a better education environment, and improving the employment rate and social image of the graduates.
This center is committed to advancing and upgrading academic research and student cultivation functions of the School of Foreign Studies on the way to the integrated development of disciplines and specialties, so that it can make the discipline construction and the specialty construction interdependent, mutually supportive, cross-cutting and interactive in their development, maintain the development of the school in a sustainable way and escalate the core competitiveness of the school in the development of universities nationwide.
